TED R. RITTMASTER Partner Ted R. Rittmaster is a partner with Foley and chair of the Los Angeles office Intellectual Property Department. He is also a member of the Electronics Practice and Entertainment & Media and Emerging Technologies Industry Teams. His practice includes patent prosecution, counseling, and licensing and opinion work for electrical, software and mechanical technology clients. Mr. Rittmaster has worked in all aspects of patent prosecution, including U.S. and international patent applications, reissue applications, reexaminations, PTO appeals, and interference practices. He also has substantial litigation experience in trade dress, trademark and patent infringement suits. He has counseled clients in infringement and validity opinions, patents and technology licensing, and general intellectual property and licensing issues. He has served on the Board of Los Angeles Intellectual Property Law Association (LAIPLA). Mr. Rittmaster is a former patent examiner in the electrical communications examining group of the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Mr. Rittmaster has substantial experience with intellectual property law matters relating to electrical and network communications, medical electronics and musical and audio electronics. His experience in the electronic and network communication fields includes hardware and software security, wired and wireless communication systems and protocols, hardware communication devices and on-line business systems and business processes. He has experience in litigation matters relating to electronic communications systems, electronic data security systems and streaming video systems. Mr. Rittmaster's experience in medical electronics includes intellectual property law matters involving electronic medical devices, biological sensors, infusion pumps and cardio-vascular systems. In cardio-vascular system technology, he has experience with intellectual property law matters involving pacemaker technology, cardiopacing simulation programs, blood oxygenators, blood handling pumps and catheters. In addition, he has experience with intellectual property law matters involving medical optics technologies, including intra-optic lens and lens manufacturing technologies. With regard to electronic music and audio technologies, Mr. Rittmaster has handled patent and other intellectual property matters relating to many types of musical instruments, including electronic keyboards, electronic drums, signal processing electronics and audio processing electronics. He also has experience in litigating patents involving electronic percussion instruments.

Mr. Rittmaster has taught patent law-related courses as an adjunct law professor for Western State University School of Law. He graduated from the University of Southern California (B.S.E.E., 1985) and Catholic University of America, Columbus School of Law (J.D., 1989). Mr. Rittmaster is admitted to practice in the state of California and before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, the United States District Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and the United States District Court for the Central District of California and the Northern District of California.
