A c c o r d i n g to t h e p r e s e n t invention, a c a p a c i t i v e t o u c h p a d i n t e g r a t e d w i t h k e y a n d h a n d w r i t i n g functions c a n p r o v i d e multiple operation modes, such as keypad, handwriting a n d mouse. The panel o f the present touchpad is defined into several regions w i t h p l e n t y o f p a t t e r n s p r i n t e d t h e r e o n for r e p r e s e n t i n g t h e interfaces c o r r e s p o n d i n g to t h e o p e r a t i o n modes. I n t h e k e y mode, t h e k e y patterns a m o n g t h e p r i n t e d patterns simulate a keyboard. I n t h e h a n d w r i t i n g m o d e , t h e handwriting region among t h e defined regions serves to h a n d w r i t i n g input. I n t h e m o u s e m o d e , t h e d e f i n e d r e g i o n s p r o v i d e a c u r s o r m o v i n g r e g i o n a n d a horizontal a n d vertical scroll bars for i n p u t o p e r a t i o n s . B A C K G R O U N D OF T H E I N V E N T I O N Touchpad is well k n o w n a n d widely u s e d i n various e l e c t r o n i c p r o d u c t s . T o u c h p a d p r o v i d e s a simple, e a s y a n d cheap pointing device, such as t h o s e i n laptop c o m p u t e r s y s t e m s f o r m o u s e f u n c t i o n . T h e r e a r e t h r e e t y p e s o f t o u c h p a d s , i.e., r e s i s t i v e , e l e c tromagnetic a n d capacitive. T h e capacitive t o u c h p a d w a s applied for touching m o d e monitors such as t h o s e in public I n t e r n e t p h o n e s a n d g u i d i n g systems. However, t h e c a p a c i t i v e t o u c h p a d l a c k s o f h a n d w r i t i n g function. T h e r e s i s t i v e t o u c h p a d has b e e n u s e d for touching m o d e monitors such as t h e a p p l i c a t i o n s i n p e r s o n a l digital assistants (PDA) a n d e l e c t r o n i c dictionaries. Unfortunately, t h e r e s i s t i v e t o u c h p a d c a n n o t b e i n p u t t e d b y light t o u c h i n g o f u s e r s ' f i n g e r s . Currently, t h e m o d u l e s a v a i l a b l e f o r h a n d w r i t i n g r e c o g n i t i o n s a n d k e y p a d s o n t a b l e t P C s a n d e l e c t r o n i c b o o k s a r e all i m p l e m e n t e d w i t h resistive o r electromagnetic touchpads. T h e resistive touchpad is operated only by focused-point pressing o n its panel, a n d t h e electromagnetic t o u c h p a d is o p e r a t e d b y a b a t t e r e d i n p u t pen. I n c o n s i d e r a t i o n o f f u n c t i o n a l i t y a n d cost, t h e c a p a c i t i v e t o u c h p a d is obviously preferred o v e r the resistive a n d electromagnetic touchpads. T h e operational principle o f the capacitive t o u c h p a d e m p l o y s t h e i n s t a n t electric c h a n g e p r o d u c e d b y capacitive effect in response to a u s e r ' s finger o r c o n d u c t o r ' s t o u c h onto the panel o f t h e t o u c h p a d to detect the position the finger o r conductor is touching. Unlike the electromagnetic touchpad, the capacitive touchpad is easy to i n t e r f a c e for users a n d n e e d s n o t a p o w e r - c o n s u m e d i n p u t pen. O n t h e o t h e r h a n d , i n t e r f a c i n g o n t o t h e c a p a c i t i v e t o u c h p a d requires no focused pressed p o i n t as that to the r e s i s t i v e t o u c h p a d a n d thus g i v e s t h e c a p a c i t i v e t o u c h p a d a l o n g e r lifetime. Moreover, t h e c a p a c i t i v e t o u c h p a d h a s simple construction, f e w e r components, a n d h i g h e r p r o d u c t i o n yield, a n d as a result, l o w e r cost is achieved for mass p r o d u c t i o n thereby. B y t h e a f o r e m e n t i o n e d i l l u s t r a t i o n , obviously, t h e c a p a c i t i v e t o u c h p a d has m o r e a d v a n t a g e s t h a n t h e o t h e r t w o . Those skilled in t h e art o f t h e c a p a c i t i v e t o u c h p a d u n d e r s t a n d t h a t t h e construction o f t h e panel 1 2 m a i n l y comprises a n insulator p l a t e o n t h e top s u r f a c e a n d a b o t t o m s u b s t r a t e f o r m e d w i t h a c o n d u c t o r wiring thereon. T h e c o n d u c t o r wiring c a n be m a d e o f metal o r o t h e r conductive materials, such as indium t i n o x i d e (ITO), a n d t h e s u b s t r a t e c a n b e a p r i n t e d c i r c u i t b o a r d (PCB), a m e m b r a n e , o r a t r a n s p a r e n t substrate. T h e h a r d w a r e structure o f the conventional panel is not t h e feature o f t h e p r e s e n t invention, a n d a c o n v e n t i o n a l p a n e l c a n b e modified to b e the h a r d w a r e for the invented touchpad. W h e n the touchpad 1 0 is switched to the key mode, the numbers, " # " a n d " * " k e y patterns o n t h e virtual k e y r e g i o n 16, t h e " D i a l " , " C o r r e c t " a n d u p / d o w n f u n c t i o n k e y p a t t e r n s o n t h e k e y r e g i o n 18, a n d t h e " R e s u m e " , " R e d i a l " a n d " R e s e r v e " function keys patterns o n t h e virtual k e y region 20 are s h o w n as numeric reference 24. T h e arrangement referred b y 24 serves as an input device o r interface o f a telephone, a n d u s e r s c a n i n p u t t h e t e l e p h o n e n u m b e r for US 7,274,353 B2 3 dialing b y t o u c h i n g t h e corresponding k e y p a t t e m s . T h e inputted telephone n u m b e r is s h o w n o n the L C D 22 after p r o c e s s i n g t h e t o u c h e d signals b y s o f t w a r e o r h a r d w a r e . I f the t o u c h p a d 10 is switched to the handwriting mode, the virtual k e y regions 1 6 a n d 20 b e c o m e a handwriting r e g i o n 25, corporating w i t h the "Input", "Correct", " F o n t " a n d " C h o o s e " function patterns o n t h e virtual k e y r e g i o n 18, as s h o w n b y n u m b e r 26. This arrangement provides users for h a n d w r i t i n g input. U s e r s w r i t e o n t h e i r i n p u t d a t a o r d r a w i n g s b y fingers o r c o n d u c t o r s i n t h e h a n d w r i t i n g r e g i o n . A f t e r r e c o g n i z e d b y s o f t w a r e o r h a r d w a r e , e.g., r e c o g n i t i o n module, the handwriting input, such as traces, words, a n d s y m b o l s , a r e s h o w n o n t h e L C D 22. By switching the t o u c h p a d 1 0 to the m o u s e mode, t h e virtual k e y r e g i o n 1 6 b e c o m e s a c u r s o r m o v i n g r e g i o n for users to control t h e c u r s o r m o v e m e n t b y t o u c h i n g o n this r e g i o n . F u r t h e r m o r e , t h e v i r t u a l k e y r e g i o n 18 b e c o m e s a v e r t i c a l s c r o l l bar, a n d t h e v i r t u a l k e y r e g i o n 2 0 b e c o m e s a horizontal scroll bar, as s h o w n b y numerous 28 in FIG. 1. T h e v e r t i c a l a n d h o r i z o n t a l scroll bars p r o v i d e d b y t h e v i r t u a l k e y r e g i o n s 1 8 a n d 20 s i m u l a t e t h e f u n c t i o n t h a t a m o u s e scrolls a w i n d o w vertically a n d horizontally, as t h o s e i n M i c r o s o f t Office w o r d p r o c e s s i n g s o f t w a r e . F u r t h e r , a j u d g m e n t m o d u l e c a n b e further a d d e d to d e t e r m i n e t h e n u m b e r o f f i n g e r s t o u c h i n g o n t h e p a n e l 12, a n d t h e r e b y different instructions c a n be p e r f o r m e d according to the n u m b e r o f t h e fingers. Usually, the key, w o r d a n d symbol patterns to represent any n u m b e r o r function keys a r e p r i n t e d o n t h e i n s u l a t o r p l a t e o n t h e t o p o f t h e p a n e l 12. H o w e v e r , v a r i a t i o n s o r modifications are p o s s i b l e w i t h i n t h e s c o p e o f t h e p r e s e n t invention. A p p l i c a t i o n f o r i n p u t d e v i c e o r i n t e r f a c e o f a n y apparatus, such as m o b i l e phone, public Internet phone, c o m p u t e r k e y b o a r d , P D A , i n f o r m a t i o n a p p l i a n c e (IA) a n d e l e c t r o n i c dictionary, t h e a d v a n t a g e s o f t h e p r e s e n t i n v e n t i o n b e c o m e m u c h clearly. E s p e c i a l l y u s i n g o n c e l l u l a r p h o n e s , t h e i n p u t function o f the p h o n e s c a n b e i n c r e a s e d enormously w i t h decreased thickness, a n d t h e cost is cheaper compared to the k e y p a d m o d u l e i n conventional cellular phones.
