My husband and I, along with our 2 teenage boys, will be in Manhattan for 2 days at the end of May. We won't have time to try too many restaurants, but we definitely want to have the quintessential NY deli experience! Which one should it be and why? Cast your vote here... Than ! Nina By Nina on Jan 13, 2005 06:39 AM 18 Replies so Far Sorry to disappoint you. There are no nyc delis left. You can go to the tourist attraction Katz Deli, but it would be wrong to call it quintessential as it is typical of nothing. By Delikat on Jan 13, 2005 07:09 AM re: Delikatz That's total BS. Katz is the real deal - it's only been there about one hundred years. So go to Katz and have pastrami, knish, and anything else. You will love the place. By Major League on Jan 13, 2005 08:01 AM re: Delikatz You know what? Choose one from those that are around today. I don't really think the person who posted the question is going to be able to go back to 1957 for the way it used to be. chowhound.chow.com/topics/217845 1/7 PLFS004294 2/15/12 If ou could choose one deli.... - Manhattan - Chowhound Sheeeeeee h. What t pe of atmosphere do ou want? 2nd ave is more like a restaurant, Kat 's has more of a cafeteria feel to me - ver open. B Shorts on Jan 13, 2005 11:03 AM The quintessential deli in NY is 2nd Avenue in m mind. The are on top of their game for ever Jewish specialt . Kat 's makes ama ing pastrami, which is what the stake their reputation on. Carnegie is a fun tourist destination, but not as good as Kat 's or 2nd Ave. Also, ma be this is personal bias, but I wouldn't label a deli serving phill cheese steaks as quintessential. B Josh on Jan 13, 2005 11:56 AM definitel kat 's . Best pastrami in manhattan. B anon. on Jan 13, 2005 12:41 PM #1 Choice is Kat 's. It hasn't changed much since pushcarts lined the Lower East Side over 100 ears ago. You'll feel the histor . Head to Houston & Ludlow Street and ou'll see the big sign that sa s "Kat 's That's All" - That's all ou need to know. Check out that old poster that urges ou to "send a salami to our bo in the arm " and take a check as ou enter this temple of pastrami and good eats. Don't lose that check. Second choice is the Second Avenue Deli on 10th Street & Second Avenue but ou'll be sitting at a regular table or a booth. Delicious food but not as colorful as Kat 's. B Fl nn on Jan 13, 2005 12:58 PM I am a frequent visitor to NYC and enjo both Kat 's and 2nd Avenue. What's also fun about both are their locations. Kat 's is a great wa to get ourself a quick peak at the Lower East Side, while 2nd Avenue gets ou to the East Village. These are areas that a lot of tourists don't visit, especiall on a short visit. So, ou might want to consider which area ou'd like to at least see for a couple of minutes...since ou have such a brief sta . chowhound.chow.com/topics/217845 4/7 PLFS004297 2/15/12 If you could choose one deli.... - Manhattan - Chowhound B. oke. doke on Jan 14, 2005 07:30 AM I ha e been o Ka ' deli 3 ime in m life, he fi o ime e e ab ol le phenominal.
