Big Numbers Is Big Fun November 20, 2012

Given the horror stories we hear about the state of public education, I'm not entirely sure for whom this little book
was written. Parents or kids, I mean. I'll take a stab though, that if you're the parent of a little one (or a teacher of
lots of little ones) fascinated by the hard sciences - biology, chemistry, physics, and the math that goes along with
them - "Big Numbers" might serve as a good refresher for talking about these things and encouraging that young,
curious mind along the path of research.

usefulness of the number "0", these brief (a half-page of text and a picture with each!) articles serve as a good
primer for further investigation into the stuff of life.
A quick example: "In the Malheur National Forest in the Blue Mountains of Oregon there is a species of fungus
called Armillaria ostoyae, more commonly known as the honey mushroom, that covers 891 hectares (2,200
acres) of land. On a piece of land that size you could fit 1,220 football pitches. But this honey fungus has been
taking its time growing to such an incredible size, and it has probably been there for 2,500 years." - p.46, Big
Numbers, "the largest living thing"
Big Numbers is big fun, and an excellent approach to the complex, and endlessly fascinating construct that is
our universe. Parents, be warned. The "whys" will be coming fast and furious after nearly every article.

For Liz Barlowe and her best friend Chad Carter, a chance to meet pop star Britney Spears would pretty much be the pinnacle of their adolescent careers.
Unfortunately, before they get the chance, a spaceship lands in their Los Angeles neighborhood, and Britney is abducted by aliens. "Drama," as the
dry-witted Liz likes to say. Liz and Chad take it upon themselves to save Britney--and the world--from the devious alien leader, Dr. Osco, a.k.a. Bridget,
and her silver-suited henchmen. Ideally, of course, they'll also meet the cute blonde singer herself in the process, and maybe even get to hang with her. Or
at least sing backup to "Oops!... I Did It Again." But saving the world (and Britney) is a lot harder than one might think. When aliens aren't controlling the
minds of the youth of the world, leading them to rebel against the grownups ("We've labored under the oppressive thumbs of the adults long enough!
Britney is our only friend!"), they're trying to chase Liz and Chad through space gates into other planets on the far side of the moon. But the two
persevere, and ultimately prevail, although Liz isn't entirely satisfied with the outcome...
Mel Gilden's send-up of L.A., American teens, Hollywood, UFOs, and Britney Spears is just goofy enough to appeal to cynics, with enough pop culture
references to be a draw for Britney fans as well. Unfortunately, it drags on a bit, although the alternating diary excerpts and narrative provide a nice
balance. Entertaining fluff for those dry spells between new Britney albums. (Ages 8 to 12) --Emilie Coulter

While the title of the book may make you turn away, the content is amusing and you just don't want to put the book
down. The book is cute about two friends in their teens following around an alien who has overtaken Britney's body.
I recommend this book for pop music fans who don't want to take this book too seriously.

Takes you into the backrooms of political power brokers December 22, 2002

Since my time is limited, when I do sit down long enough, I tend to favor business books. I have found many of
the popular "top selling" books to be entertaining though the story and characters are gone from my mind as
soon as I turn the final page.
Capital Offense has changed that thinking. For the first time in many years, I sat down to read a thrilling book
that kept me intrigued and awake late into the night, It was a great page-turner that will still be in my memory
years from now. Carolyn Lane is fabulous - her style and methodology are the envy of every strategic thinker.
It is nice to read a book with STRONG female characters that work well with STRONG male characters.
Great job on a first book, Ms. Antrim. I cannot wait for the next one. I wish you the best of luck. Your talent is
evident.

I am an aspiring writer; and, if I achieve HALF the TALENT and SKILL that Kathleen Antrim demonstrates, my
own career will be a success!!! I was captivated by the book--it has wonderfully interwoven story-lines (in fact,
they are seemless) and sub-text.
I can only imagine that those with deep-seeded personality deficits may find this book unsettling--as the
characters are so realistically portrayed in their human flaws and frailty. And, of course, it makes me wonder if
I'll ever get to be this accomplished in my own career and life! I guess, in the meanwhile, I'll live vicariously
through the wonderful success of Ms. Antrim!!! Kudos from one aspiring writer to one that's demonstrated she
has already MADE IT!! (Isn't the taste of success SWEET!!)

A Very Fast Read
Rather interesting political story, but not up to the

It is not that good
I see Vince Flynn and Lee Child (one of my top
favourite authors) praise this book, it was cheap,
so I bought it.

About the Author
Steve Niles is the current writer of the monthly comic book HELLSPAWN and Image Comics series FUSED! He has also contributed to several issues of
SPAWN, SAM & TWITCH, and is co-writer with Todd McFarlane on the upcoming SPAWN 2 movie. His first comic for IDW Publishing, 30 DAYS OF NIGHT,
has become one of the hottest titles in recent memory, and will be made into a major motion picture with a screenplay by Steve himself. Steve began his
career by foundling his own publishing company, Arcane Comix, where he published, edited and adapted comics and anthologies for Eclipse Comics. His
adaptations include works by Clive Barker, Richard Matheson and Harlan Ellison. He has also written for Dark Horse Comics, contributing to titles such as
DARK HORSE PRESENTS and 9-11: ARTISTS RESPOND.
Originally from Washington DC, Steve now resides in Los Angeles with his wife Nikki and their two black cats.

Steve Niles (born June 21, 1965) is an American comic book author and novelist, known for works such as 30 Days of Night, Criminal
Macabre, Simon Dark, Mystery Society and Batman: Gotham County Line.

Guns, Drugs & Monsters is a Winner January 4, 2003

STEVE NILES writes a mean hard-boiled novel. He also writes a wicked horror novel. What makes NILES
unique is that he does this in the same book! Guns, Drugs and Monsters is actually the second in a [hopefully
long-running] series featuring Cal MacDonald. Cal is a human with the gift / curse that he knows that monsters
walk among us. He knows this because he hunts them. Well, a guy has to make a living somehow, doesn't he?
NILES skillfully combines the best elements of CHANDLER and HAMMETT along with a dose of KING, plus a
good bit of humor as well. I read through Guns, Drugs and Monsters in nearly one sitting [it's that much fun]. It
also features spot illustrations by ASHLEY WOOD that are the icing on the cake. I've already ordered Savage
Membrane [the book that started the series]. If it's just half as good as Guns then I'll still have a winner.

Steve Niles wrote a hard core novel that I just couldn't put down for anything. Guns, Drugs and Monsters is full
of creativity, energy, wit and charm in every chapter. I found myself savoring every page of this book, often
turning away to laugh and collect myself after being stunned by the incredible energy of the prose. This book
was filled with nothing but "hardcore super stuff."

Not once I could of put the book down, it got my attention and held it in. (Guns, Drugs and monsters, A Cal
McDonald mystery.) Cal McDonald has made a career helping and hunting the dark creatures that haunt the
world and has made as many friends as he has enemies. to some he is friend and protector. but to most- those
who prey on innocent humans lives- Cal is a sworn enemy.
I recommend you read this book because once you have a taste of Steve Niles style, you never want to get it
out of your system.
