I reside in New York County, New York, and am a full time forensic document examiner with
fully equipped facilities for the non-destructive examination of documents.
I have studied the examination of documents with Pearl and Martin Tytell, both of whom had
been licensed by the University of the State of New York to teach Questioned Document
Examination and Identification. I have studied the standard texts in the field and have taken
courses in document analysis and related subjects at Georgetown University’s Institute of Advanced
Analytical Chemistry and Georgetown University’s Institute for Criminal Law and Procedure;
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute; the Institute of Paper Chemistry (then at Lawrence University,
Appleton, Wisconsin); Rochester Institute of Technology; and John Jay College of Criminal Justice. I
have also taken specialized courses and continuing professional education courses, seminars,
workshops, etc. I regularly attend meetings of professional organizations in the field and keep
abreast of the current periodicals and relevant literature.
As part of my initial training and continuing professional education, as well as for specific
projects and cases, over more than forty years I have conducted research in various phases of
document examination. These have included the history, differentiation, dating, and identification
of handwriting (including cursive writing, handprinting, signatures, numerals, etc.); typewriter and
other type styles; typewriters and other business imaging equipment; paper; ink and ink
differentiation techniques; the development and production of specialized overlay plates for
examining typewritten and other machine generated documents (in use internationally by private
and government document examiners); as well as in basic areas of the theory and practice of
document examination. This research has included on-site observations at producers of paper and
papermaking equipment, typewriters, typewriter type and elements, ribbons, carbon paper, ink,
pens, digital typestyles, etc., in the United States and other countries. I have also visited
government and private document laboratories in this country and abroad to observe techniques
and procedures. The results of some of this research have been included in technical presentations.
I am a diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Document Examiners (US) and hold the
Forensic Science Society (UK) Diploma in Document Examination as a qualified specialist in
forensic document examination; and belong to the American Academy of Forensic Sciences
(Questioned Document section member and recipient of the section’s Ordway Hilton Award), the
American Society for Testing and Materials (Committee on Forensic Sciences, Membership
Secretary; Past-Chairman and currently Vice-Chairman of the Sub-Committee on Questioned
Documents; recipient of the ASTM Forensic Sciences Award and the ASTM Award of Merit; and
ASTM Fellow), the American Society of Questioned Document Examiners, the Evidence
Photographers International Council, the Inter-Society Color Council, and have participated in
meetings of these and other learned organizations in North America and Europe. I am also an active
participant in the work of the Scientific Working Group for Forensic Document Examination
(SWGDOC) and was a founding member of the editorial board of the International Journal of
Forensic Document Examiners.
I have taught and lectured on various aspects of the subject to document examiners employed in
public and private laboratories as well as to investigators, attorneys, etc. I have also been consulted
as an expert in typewriter history, and was a consultant in this area for an exhibition at the CooperHewitt Museum, the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Design.
I have worked on document cases submitted by courts, prosecutors, public defenders and legal
aid societies, law firms, government crime laboratories, other document examiners, private
individuals, banks, insurance companies, corporations, etc. Since 1971 I have testified on
handwriting and typewriting identification as well as other document problems in State and Federal
courts and other venues.
