DECLARATION OF HANNANEH HAJISHIRZI 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT WESTERN DISTRICT OF WASHINGTON 9 10 STATE OF WASHINGTON, et. al., 11 12 Plaintiff, v. CIVIL ACTION NO. 2:17-cv-00141-JLR 13 DONALD TRUMP, et.al., 14 DECLARATION OF HANNANEH HAJISHIRZI Defendants. 15 16 17 18 19 Pursuant to 28 U.S.C. § 1746(2), I, Hannaneh Hajishirzi, hereby declare as follows: 1. I am over the age of eighteen and competent to testify herein. 2. I came to the United States from Iran in 2003 to study computer science at the University 20 21 22 of Illinois. 3. After completing my degree and receiving a post-doctoral degree from Carnegie Mellon 23 and Disney Research, I joined the University of Washington as an Assistant Research 24 Professor of Electrical Engineering. I have taught courses in Artificial Intelligence to more 25 26 1 ATTORNEY GENERAL OF WASHINGTON 800 Fifth Avenue, Suite 2000 Seattle, WA 98104-3188 (206) 464-7744 1 than hundred UW students, advised more than 10 graduate and undergraduate students, 2 and brought millions of dollars funds to the university through gifts and research grants 3 4 5 6 from government and industry. 4. I became a U.S. citizen on April, 2016. 5. My parents still live in Iran. They are both currently retired. My mother was an education 7 administrator at a high school, and my father was an instructor in the traffic department. 8 6. I petitioned for immigrant visas on my parents’ behalf on April 2016. I started the petition 9 because my husband and I were starting a family and wanted to have them come to the 10 11 United States to visit us. Although my parents completed their consular interview in April 2017, their visa applications are still pending. 12 13 14 7. I recently gave birth to a baby girl and I’m hoping that my parents will be able to visit their new granddaughter. 15 8. However, with the President’s September 24, 2017 proclamation, I’m afraid they will 16 never be able to visit us in the United States. The President’s proclamation bars Iranians 17 from receiving immigrant visas indefinitely. This means my parents may never be able to 18 19 20 21 22 share our lives in the United States. 9. If the proclamation goes into effect, my husband and I are thinking of applying for jobs in Canada, where the immigration policies are not discriminatory and my parents would be able to visit us. 23 10. If that happens, the University of Washington will lose one but two of its professors. My 24 husband, also an Iranian American, is an Associate Professor at the University of 25 26 2 ATTORNEY GENERAL OF WASHINGTON 800 Fifth Avenue, Suite 2000 Seattle, WA 98104-3188 (206) 464-7744 1 Washington.
