Sim ilar.... but different.....
Th e origin al Arc was certain ly good lookin g ph on e wh en we first cam e across it last year. Th e
dan ger with ph on es with u n iqu e, fash ion able cu rves an d lin es is th at, well, fash ion s ch an ge.
I m reviewin g th e wh ite version of th e ph on e, an d I was su rprised at h ow good it still looks. Th e
wh ite colou rin g was good en ou gh of a n ew pain t job to m ake th e ph on e s looks feel fresh again .
I actu ally th in k it looks great. Th e h u ge 4.2 in ch display, wh en powered off, con trasts sh arply
with th e wh ite an d creates an oddly retro-fu tu ristic look wh ich is great on th e eye. It retain s
th e ch rom e lin in g on th e sides.
As th e ph ysical dim en sion s (125 x 63 x 8 .7 m m ) an d design h aven t ch an ged, it s still as
su rprisin gly com fortable to h old as its predecessor th e con cave arch in g over th e palm of th e
h an d to rest n icely on th e h an d with a n ice balan ced weigh t of 117g. On e th in g I wish ed Son y
Ericsson h ad ch an ged was th e ch oice of m aterials. It still feels as plastic as its you n ger broth er.
Yes, th e bu ild qu ality is fin e th e lack of creakin g wh ile squ eezin g th e ph on e is testam en t to
th at bu t th e m aterials don t feel great.
Had th e ph on e been m ade ou t of h igh er qu ality m aterials, it cou ld h ave laid claim to tru ly bein g
a prem iu m ph on e. As it is, it rem ain s a ph on e th at you ll wan t you r frien ds to look at, bu t
probably n ot tou ch

Th e 48 0 x 8 54 4.2 in ch LCD Bravia display im presses with its vibran cy an d colou r satu ration . It s a great size,
an d wh en viewed h ead-on is an im pressive display. Disappoin tin gly th e viewin g an gles are poor even at a
sligh t an gle colou rs wash ou t. Re-readin g m y review of th e origin al Arc, it didn t appear th at th e origin al s
display wash ed ou t so easily. In deed, I wrote th at colou rs on ly wash ed ou t at 160 degrees, wh ereas th e Arc S s
display seem s to wash ou t at a m u ch n arrower 120 degrees. Not su re wh at SE h ave don e to ch an ge th is, bu t th e
Arc S s screen seem s a bit weaker th an its predecessor's.

Th e Arc S s O/ S is An droid Gin gerbread v 2.3.4, overlayed with SE s Tim escape UI. I th ou gh t Tim escape was dated last year an d so you can im agin e, a year
on , m y th ou gh ts on it - especially com pared to th e cu rren t h igh bar set by th e sleek sexin ess of An droid 4.0 . Noth in g m u ch h as ch an ged at all with respect
to Tim escape.
Th e processor h as been u pgraded to 1.4 GHz, wh ich isn t h eaps an d bou n ds above th e 1 GHz on th e origin al. Certain ly it s n ot en ou gh of a bu m p u p to
h ave an y n oticeable effect com pared to th e Arc wh ich , to be fair, was n o slou ch itself.
Som eth in g wh ich Son y Ericsson appear to h ave rectified is th e keyboard. I was dissatisfied with th e SE keyboard on th e origin al Arc to th e exten t th at I
qu ickly down loaded an An droid Market replacem en t. I was expectin g n o ch an ge in th is regard wh en first bootin g u p th e Arc S I was already th in kin g of
th e keyboard replacem en t I was goin g to im m ediately down load. Bu t, you kn ow wh at? For som e reason , th e SE keyboard on th e Arc S was n ot bad at all.
I still th in k th ere are better Market altern atives bu t I u sed it for abou t a week with ou t bein g fru strated

Th e ph on e still h as th e 3 h ardware An droid bu tton s (losin g th e Search bu tton from th e stan dard An droid
fou r-bu tton set u p) wh ich I liked. Again , du e to th e size of th e screen th ey are extrem ely close to th e bottom
of th e ph on e, wh ich can occasion ally call for som e seriou sly awkward fin ger gym n astics. Still, th e fact th at
th ey are h ardware key m ean s th at you can be su re wh en you ve pressed th em .
On e m assive th in g th at Son y Ericsson om itted to ch an ge from th e origin al, is probably th e sm allest ph ysical
featu re on th e ph on e, yet h as a h u ge im pact on u sability. For reason s th at appear pu rely for style
over u sability, th e Arc S's power/ lock bu tton is tin y, located on th e top left of th e device. Lockin g th e ph on e
qu ickly can prove to be an n oyin g, given its sm all size, an d also th e difficu lty in pressin g it on ce located by
tou ch . It sou n ds like I'm bein g pedan tic, bu t ju st cou n t th e n u m ber of tim es you lock you r ph on e over th e
cou rse of a day.
From wh at I cou ld see, th ere was n o differen ce in call qu ality between th e Arc S an d its older broth er
very good an d n o issu es to n ote h ere.

On e stren gth th at th e Arc S h as in h erited from its predecessor is th e excellen t
cam era. It s still got an 8 MP sen sor with LED flash an d au tofocu s, produ cin g
excellen t stills with good colou r reprodu ction . Also, th e cam era sh u tter is
works qu ickly, en ablin g to sn ap an d sn ap in qu ick su ccession with ou t m u ch
delay at all.
At 720 p, th e video captu re produ ces decen t HD videos, alth ou gh th e ou tpu t
isn t as sh arp as it cou ld be. Wh at I did like was th e fu n ction al au tofocu s
wh ich worked very well (see video righ t), effortlessly focu sin g n ear an d far
with som e excellen t m acro focu sin g.
It also retain s th e Arc s ability to crop a video
u ploads.

Conclusion
Given th e h igh ben ch m ark th e cu ttin g edge An droid ph on es h ave set recen tly, I was h on estly n ot expectin g very m u ch from th e Arc S. Alth ou gh I liked its
predecessor, I in itially th ou gh t th at th e com bin ation of th e m in or tech n ical u pgrades with an u n -evolved Tim escape UI wou ld leave th e Arc S eatin g its
com eptition s du st before it was even released.
I did, h owever, qu ite en joy u sin g th e Arc S. Th ere s som eth in g qu ite likeable abou t it an d th ere h ave been som e cru cial im provem en ts to th e cam era an d
th e keyboard, alth ou gh th e screen seem s to h ave taken a sligh t step back with its poorer viewin g an gles.
Please Son y Ericsson (n ow ju st Son y ), please u se som e prem iu m m aterials on you r n ext Arc/ Xperia h an dset (as well as van illa An droid, please). Th en ,
m aybe th e wider m arket m igh t con sider th e Arc/ Xperia lin e as a gen u in e com petitor to th e h igh en d h an dsets ou t th ere.
As it is, th e Arc S is a decen t, u seable an d likeable u pgrade. Not bad.
