"I made it very c l e a r . I was f o r t u n a t e t o be on c e r t a i n teams t h a t wouldn't t o l e r a t e it." LeMond even l e f t one squad when h i s c o n t r a c t expired, he s a i d , because one of i t s riders was caught using drugs and t h e team d i r e c t o r s d i d nothing about it. B u t LeMond s a i d ' t h a t i n a s p o r t i n which a t h l e t e s o f t e n pedal e i g h t hours a day f o r weeks a t a time, some competitors look f o r any advantage. "It i s so p h y s i c a l l y demanding t h a t even a s l i g h t edge can make a d i f f e r e n c e , " he s a i d . "I d o n ' t b e l i e v e any rider wants t o t a k e drugs. B u t there's a huge temptation t o maintain e q u a l i t y . " Even though cycling has been under suspicion s i n c e 1967, when a British rider died of amphetamine use during t h e Tour de France, drug use picked u p e i g h t or nine years ago, LeMond s a i d . Nor i s drug use l i m i t e d t o cycling. Running and swimming, along w i t h professional s p o r t s such a s f o o t b a l l , have been t a i n t e d by scandal. I n recent weeks, t h r e e 1996 Olympians - - - a swimmer, a w e i g h t l i f t e r and a sprinter - - have been accused o f possible doping. "Everything you take, t h e r e ' s a s i d e e f f e c t , " s a i d LeMond, who was forced t o r e t i r e because of a r a r e g e n e t i c muscle disease.
